The coach who helped Banyana Banyana to victory in the Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco last week, Desiree Ellis, says the secret to the team’s victory was God. Ellis speaks to James de Villiers about how women’s sport has always struggled to receive adequate support in South Africa, and how she was only able to play for the national team at 30 because of apartheid.

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis, 59, doesn’t like to talk politics. Because, as she says early on in the interview, she is a football coach and not a politician.
