Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane has shared his thoughts on Mohamed Salah’s effectiveness as a midfielder with the Egyptian national team.
Egypt have secured their spot at the Round of 16 in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after a narrow 1-0 victory over neighbours Sudan.
Despite qualifying to the knock-out stage, many have criticized the performance of the Pharaohs, especially after scoring only two goals in their three Group stage games.
After Egypt’s third game against Sudan, concerns have arisen between fans and pundits due to Mohamed Salah playing outside of his original position at right wing.
The fans have blamed Liverpool’s star’s poor performances for that issue, while others believe putting him in the midfield would be the right fit.
Mosimane has shared his thoughts on the topic, believing that Salah playing as a midfielder is not the right move for Carlos Queiroz to make.
“Playing Mohamed Salah in a different position than the right-wing is not easy,” Pitso said.
“It’s difficult to put Salah in Abdallah El-Said or Mohamed Elneny’s position, he’s never done it before, not even at Basel or Roma.
“I tried changing some players’ positions in my team, but some were just upset about it, and they told me they can’t perform well in their new roles.
“I respect that because it means they are telling the truth.
“Some other times it works, Hamdi Fathi for example, he played as a centre-back and he did it really well.”
