Gambia: Public Anger as Gambian President Accused of Diverting China Donated Rise To His Supporters
Inside sources have reported that; the Gambian President Adama Barrow seems to be diverting the donated China rice to his presumed supporters across the country.
Barrow who took delivery of the 2700 tonnes of rice from the Chinese government on behalf of Gambians earlier this month, is criticiser for using the rice to garner political support from the masses.
Speaking to this medium in the form of anonymity, a concerned citizen disclosed that; the president sent his aides to deliver ten bags of the donated rice to his (the source’s) mother, a ‘yaye compin‘ of an association in Sukuta last weekend.
“You know my mother’s association comprises tens of women from mainly Sukuta, these women are very popular and influential in the area, so perhaps the president is trying to foster more cordial ties with them.” He explained.
According to him, the rice was meant for his mother and members of her association, unfortunately for President Barrow, the rice was rejected and sent back to the Statehouse.
” My mother is a staunch supporter of the United Democratic Party UDP, likewise the members of the association, maybe he though he could snatch them from the party but the move was impossible to win them”.
Elsewhere in the Kanifing Municipality and Kombo South, similar donations where reportedly made.
In the Upper River Region where the president hailed from and people there have also confirmed the news of the distribution of the said rice, which they said, was only dished out to sympathizers or politicians who are linked to the presidency.
They said while the president was observing a short vacation in his hometown last weekend, a consignment of rice was taken to various communities in the URR and was distributed to numerous households.
